USED Boss MT-2 Metal Zone (030)
Boss · MT-2 · 1991–present
The Metal Zone came out in 1991, after the HM-2 Heavy Metal had sold poorly, and it was a hit right away. Guitar Player picked it as the standout for metal in a 29-pedal shootout in 1992. It has sold over a million units since, second only to the DS-1 among Boss pedals. The design is busy for a distortion. There's a two-stage gain circuit, seven filters before and after the clipping, and an EQ with high and low knobs plus a mid you can sweep from 200Hz to 5kHz, all with 15dB of cut or boost. That much range is how it got its bad name, because cranking everything makes it buzz. Kurt Ballou of Converge says that's the wrong way to use it. Prince toured with one through the 1990s, Joe Bonamassa calls it his favorite Boss dirt pedal, and Biffy Clyro's tech says he hears no difference from one unit to the next. Since the design hasn't changed, buy on condition and start with the gain low.

With stacked dual EQ knobs, there are more pots to go scratchy, so check them all. Otherwise these are sturdy, and Biffy Clyro's tech says they've held up better than most gear on tour.
Buying guide
The MT-2 hasn't changed since 1991, so buy on condition, and we'd take the $70 one titled works. About 156 are for sale and most ask $70–85 delivered, a tight band, so a box or a title saying vintage or 1999 isn't worth paying more for. With stacked EQ knobs there are more pots to go scratchy, so ask for a clip turning each knob, inner and outer, and sweeping the mid. Titles saying Roland JAPAN are wrong, since every MT-2 was built in Taiwan or, lately, Malaysia.
