Brand
MXR began in 1972 in Rochester, New York, when Keith Barr and Terry Sherwood turned their audio repair business into a pedal company. The name is short for mixer. The first pedal was the Phase 90, built in a basement and sold at gigs, followed by the Distortion+, the Dyna Comp and the Blue Box, and MXR incorporated in 1974. Its small, tough, brightly painted boxes stood out at a time when most effects came in big enclosures. Early pedals carry a cursive script logo, and block lettering took over in the mid to late 1970s. From 1981 MXR added LEDs and small power jacks. The company closed in 1984, and Barr went on to found Alesis. Dunlop bought the brand in 1987 and restarted it with those same four pedals. When you shop, the logo, the LED and the power jack tell you roughly when a pedal was made, but ask for a photo of the circuit board too.
