MXR · Phase 90 script · 1974–about 1977
The Phase 90 is where MXR started. Keith Barr and Terry Sherwood ran a repair shop in Rochester, New York, and their first pedal was this orange phaser, built in a basement and sold at gigs before MXR incorporated in 1974. It's a four-stage design with one Speed knob, and the earliest boxes carry a cursive script logo. David Gilmour used a Phase 90 on Shine On You Crazy Diamond in 1975. MXR moved to block lettering around 1977, and Dunlop says that's when the engineers added a feedback resistor, which gives the block version a stronger, slightly dirtier swoosh. The script circuit sounds softer and smoother, and that's the sound collectors chase. The logo and the circuit didn't change on the same day, though, so some script boxes hold block circuits and some early block boxes hold script ones. Originals have no LED and no power jack. If you want the script sound without the vintage risk, Dunlop's '74 Vintage Phase 90 and Script Phase 90 reissues are built to that circuit.
After fifty years the Speed pot can get scratchy, footswitches wear and battery snaps break or corrode. Block-circuit units, modded boards and reissues sometimes get listed as original script Phase 90s.
Buying guide
For an original script Phase 90, we'd buy the 1975 one from a US pedal dealer at $480 delivered, under the $550–950 band most of the about 23 listed ask. Thirteen of them ship from Japanese dealers, mostly at $700–1,050 delivered, including a 1974 Bud box, the earliest enclosure, that we'd pick for a collection at $757. MXR's logo and circuit changes overlapped around 1977, so ask for a board photo to confirm the script circuit (it has no feedback resistor), compare it with reference photos, and check the sides for an added LED or power jack, since originals ran on a 9V battery only. Skip the $507 Bud box from talljoy, whose title copies a $809 listing from another seller word for word.
$270.45est. delivered
A no-bid auction at $270 delivered, the lowest price on a script Phase 90 here, though it'll climb. It's titled 1977, the year MXR changed logos, so get a board photo first, and we'd stop around $550, the bottom of the band.
1977 MXR MX-101 Script Phase 90
$479.99delivered
A 1975 original from a US dealer that also stocks vintage RATs, at $480 delivered and about $70 under the band. It isn't titled tested, so ask for a clip of the Speed knob slow and fast and a photo of the battery snap.
1975 MXR Phase 90 Script Logo Phaser Effects Pedal Vintage Original Issue
$1,052.34est. delivered
Titled tested and full original by a Japanese dealer, so there's the least guesswork. You pay for it at $1,052 delivered with $163 shipping, about $100 over the band.
MXR Phase 90 Script Logo Guitar Effect Pedal 1975 Full Original Tested
$756.54est. delivered
Titled 1974 in the Bud box, the earliest enclosure, for $757 delivered from Japan, inside the band and under most Japan asks. The title makes no test claim, so ask for a board photo and a sweep clip.
