Electro-Harmonix · Small Stone · 1974–1980s; reissued from the 1990s
The Small Stone was the first pedal David Cockerell designed for Electro-Harmonix after he came over from EMS, the British synthesizer maker. It arrived around 1974 or 1975, and it sold so well it pushed the Big Muff down to EHX's second-best seller. It's a four-stage phaser, and the circuit uses OTAs as the variable resistors that move the sweep. You get one Rate knob and a Color switch that turns up the feedback for a stronger, more pronounced phase. Jean-Michel Jarre's phased synth sounds leaned heavily on one. After EHX closed in the 1980s, Mike Matthews had Small Stones made in Russia alongside the Sovtek Big Muff, and he told Vintage Guitar that reissue was exactly the same as the original. Today's version lives in a small die-cast box with true bypass and a 9.6-volt power jack. If you want the 1970s look and story, buy an original and check that the sweep is smooth. If you just want the swirl, the current version is the easy pick.
Scratchy Rate pots and tired footswitches are the usual wear on older units. Vintage boxes can also have corroded battery clips or added power jacks.
Buying guide
A Small Stone is an easy buy from a US seller, where original EH4800s and 1990s Russian ones mostly ask $158–250 delivered, and the V3 from a US pedal dealer at $170 is our pick. About 106 are listed, and the $210–490 band runs higher than that because Japanese dealers ask $289–741 for the same pedals. Ask for a clip turning the Rate knob slow to fast with the Color switch flipped, and a photo of the battery clip, since scratchy pots and corroded clips are the usual wear on old ones. Skip the $741 V2 from Japan, about $250 over the band with nothing in the title to explain it.
