Charlie Wicks started ProCo Sound in Kalamazoo, Michigan, in 1974, the day after the Sound Factory music business he worked for there closed. ProCo made speaker cabinets, cables and stage snakes until engineer Scott Burnham built the RAT in the company's basement around 1978. The RAT went into production in 1979, shrank to a compact box in 1984, gained an LED as the RAT2 in 1988 and spun off the TurboRAT, the You Dirty RAT and more. Wicks died in 2010, and RapCo bought ProCo soon after. The RAT2 has been built in China since 2008, while ProCo's other RAT models stayed in the USA. Josh Scott of JHS, who has taken hundreds of RATs apart, says the core circuit hasn't changed since 1981. In a listing, use the logo and box shape to date it, ask for a gut shot to spot modded diodes, and check all three pots.
