ProCo RAT2
ProCo added an on/off LED in 1988 and called the result the RAT2. The circuit stayed the same as the 1981 RAT, the screen printing gave way to a glow-in-the-dark Mylar overlay, and engineer Scott Corstange remembers customers swearing the new one sounded different anyway. Early RAT2s still used the LM308 op-amp. When that chip went obsolete, ProCo's Gerry Carpenter swapped in the OP07DP, and sources put the change anywhere from the mid-1990s to about 2005. By the early 2000s ProCo couldn't keep up with demand, so from 2008 parts supplier Neutrik has built the RAT2 in China, in the sloped box first used on the TurboRAT. Josh Scott of JHS rates those as well built and hard to pick from any vintage RAT, though he says the pots break easily. It's turned up everywhere from grunge records to jazz guitarist John Scofield's rig. Buy a flat-top USA one if you want an older RAT. Buy a sloped one if you just want the sound.

What to check before you buy
The pots on China-made RAT2s break easily, and a repair usually means replacing all three. Older units may have worn switches or crackly pots, and plenty have modded clipping diodes.
- 01Box shape: Check the side profile in the photos. A flat top means a USA-made RAT2 from before 2008, and a sloped box means the China-made version.
- 02Op-amp: Ask for a photo of the op-amp if the era matters to you. LM308 marks an early unit and OP07 a later one.
- 03Diodes: Ask for a gut shot. Stock RATs clip with two small glass 1N4148 diodes, so LEDs or added toggles mean a mod.
- 04Pots: Ask whether all three knobs turn without crackle. They should sweep smoothly and feel firm.
- 05LED: Ask the seller to confirm the LED works. It should light every time the pedal switches on.
