The You Dirty RAT started as one setting on another pedal. ProCo's Gerry Carpenter, who'd designed the TurboRAT, built the two-channel Deucetone in 2002, and one of its clipping modes was called Dirty RAT. Players wanted that mode on its own, so ProCo released it as the You Dirty RAT in 2004. It swaps the RAT's silicon clipping diodes for germanium 1N34A diodes, which makes it more saturated and more compressed than a RAT2. That's the opposite of the TurboRAT, whose red LEDs give more headroom and a more open sound. Josh Scott of JHS notes the germanium diodes were later replaced with Schottky BAT41 parts because germanium got scarce, and he says the change doesn't affect the tone. When the RAT2 moved to China in 2008, ProCo's other RAT models stayed in the USA, this one included. If you like a RAT but want it thicker and squishier, this is the one to buy. If you want more clarity, look at a TurboRAT.
It's a younger pedal, so problems are mostly wear, like crackly pots, a tired switch or a loose jack. Make sure it's a real You Dirty RAT and not a RAT2 with modded diodes.
Buying guide
Buy a new one from a US shop at about $160 delivered, the going price at Perfect Circuit and a few other dealers here, or a used one from a US seller for less, like the $109 one. Only about 17 are listed, and the $150–340 band is stretched by Japanese resellers asking $258–388 delivered for a pedal ProCo still makes in the USA. Check that the top says You Dirty RAT, since a RAT2 with swapped diodes isn't the same pedal, and ask whether the pots turn without crackle. Skip the $205 one with no seller name or feedback shown.
