Brand
Ibanez is the guitar brand of Hoshino Gakki in Nagoya, Japan, which was best known in the late 1960s and early 1970s for copies of Gibson, Fender and Rickenbacker guitars. Its pedals came from Nisshin Onpa, the Japanese maker behind the Maxon brand. Hoshino licensed Nisshin's designs for sale outside Japan, and Nisshin engineer Susumu Tamura designed the TS808 Tube Screamer in 1979. The 9 series followed around 1982 with the TS9, AD9 and FL9 and was gone by 1985. Original TS9s became so sought after that Ibanez reissued the pedal in 1992, and the TS9DX joined in 1998. Nisshin stopped building the TS9 for Ibanez in 2002, and later Tube Screamers come from another maker. In a listing, check the bottom label and serial, look for Maxon printing on the board or battery cover, and ask for a photo of the op-amp chip.
