Susumu Tamura designed this circuit at Nisshin Onpa, the company behind Maxon, in 1979. It went on sale in Japan as the Maxon OD808, and the Tube Screamer name came after a visit to Sam Ash in Manhattan, where Sammy Ash said it sounded like a screaming tube amp. Stevie Ray Vaughan made it famous, and Analog Man has logged an 808 that came by way of SRV and Cesar Diaz. Inside, two silicon diodes clip in the feedback loop of a dual op-amp. Most originals have the Japanese JRC4558D, though some carry a Malaysian TI RC4558P or a rarer TL4558P, and Analog Man hears very little difference between them. Early units have the (R) mark after Ibanez and a nut holding the power jack. The TS9 replaced the 808 around 1982, so originals are scarce. The 2004 reissue keeps the JRC4558D and the 808 output section on Ibanez's newer board. Buy an original for the history, and the reissue if you just want the sound.
Chipped paint is normal on an 808, and many show a different-colored undercoat at the corners. The bigger risks are a swapped or socketed chip, a modded circuit, or a reissue listed as an original.
Buying guide
If you want the sound, buy a 2004 reissue, like the boxed one from Japan at $145 delivered or the cheapest US one at $105. About 128 are for sale and most ask $150–390 delivered, but that band is reissues and anniversary editions, while originals from the 1979 to 1982 run ask $1,315 to $3,302 here, mostly from Japanese dealers. On an original, ask for the serial (the ones Analog Man has logged run about 104000 to 181000) and a gut shot, and treat JRC4558D in a title as the seller's claim until you see the chip. Skip the $1,800 Overdrive Pro from a zero-feedback seller, since Overdrive Pro is the name reissues are usually listed under.
