Ibanez TS9DX Turbo
John Lomas at Hoshino USA designed the TS9DX in 1998, after watching Dunlop's multi-mode wahs fly off the shelves. It's a TS9 with a fourth knob. That Mode switch picks between TS9, +, Hot and Turbo by swapping clipping diodes and the tone capacitor, and each step adds low end and volume. Analog Man found the later modes actually have less distortion even though they sound bigger, with red LEDs doing the clipping in Hot and the diodes basically gone in Turbo. He also rates it on bass. Joan Jett has used one. The first batch had the Drive pot wired so it gave less gain than a TS9. Hoshino added a jumper wire in early 1999, and later that year Maxon fixed it on the board, so a 1998 unit may be a little tamer in TS9 mode. Like the TS9, it was built by Maxon until late 2002. If you want a classic Tube Screamer and a fatter boost in one box, this is it. If you only need the TS9 sound, buy a TS9.

What to check before you buy
First-batch units from 1998 give less drive in TS9 mode because of a wiring mistake on the Drive pot. The Mode knob and the small boards mounted on the pots are extra parts that can wear, and late-2002 units had input jacks that could jam.
- 01Modes: Ask for a short clip stepping through all four modes. Each one should get a little louder and bassier than the last.
- 02Drive board: Ask for a photo of the small board on the Drive pot. A jumper wire there means a fixed first-batch unit, and a newer board needs no fix.
- 03Battery cover: Check the battery cover in the photos. MAXON on it means it was built before late 2002.
- 04Jacks: On arrival, plug in and out of both jacks. The plug should seat firmly and pull out without sticking.
- 05Switch: On arrival, click the switch a dozen times. It should engage every time without a loud pop.
Buying guide
Which one to buy
§ Oct 10, 2026Ibanez still makes the TS9DX, and US music stores list it new at $129.99 delivered, so a used one should come in under that. We'd buy the one titled tested and working at $86 delivered, or the open-box one titled NIB at $103. About 72 are for sale and most ask $110–160 delivered, and plenty ship from Japan with $20 to $80 of shipping that can push them past a new one. Ask for a clip stepping through all four modes, each a little louder and bassier than the last, and skip the copied-title listing from Japan.
