Boss · BD-2 · 1995–present
Boss released the BD-2 in 1995, when blues was back in fashion thanks to Gary Moore, Eric Clapton and a wave of younger players. The goal was a drive that behaves like an amp. Turn your guitar down and it cleans up, and Boss's own book calls it the first effect that let you control distortion with the guitar's volume knob. Inside, it skips the usual op-amp chip for discrete gain stages built from FETs and a transistor, followed by a fixed Fender-style tone stack. It's flatter in the mids than a Tube Screamer and gets edgy and almost fuzzy with the gain up. Modders loved it. Josh Scott says JHS Pedals began when he fixed one of the two Blues Drivers he played. Tom Morello, Billie Joe Armstrong, Prince and John Mayer have all used one. Analog Man warns that a stock one can be an icepick through a Fender amp, and his shop is one of several that mod them. In 2017 Boss moved it to a tiny surface-mount board, so buy an older Taiwan unit if you want it modded.
Plenty of BD-2s have been modded, so ask what's been changed and by whom. Scratchy pots and worn jacks are the usual wear on older units.
Buying guide
Every BD-2 was built in Taiwan or, later, Malaysia, so buy on condition, and we'd take the $78 one titled tested from a US seller. About 126 are for sale and most ask $90–120 delivered, many from Japanese dealers who put MIJ or Japan in the title to mean where it ships from. Plenty have been modded, so ask what's been changed, and if you want one modded later, look for metal on all four sides of the power jack, the older board from before the 2017 surface-mount switch. Skip the $372–469 ones titled early 1997, 1995 super early or early type, since early units use the same circuit as the $78 ones.
$61.78est. delivered
The lowest delivered BD-2 right now at $62, a 2014 through-hole Taiwan unit, but it's an auction with 20 bids and a day left. We'd stop at about $78 delivered, the price of the tested one.
