Boss · SD-1 · 1981–present
Boss built the SD-1 in 1981 to answer the Ibanez Tube Screamer, a pedal modeled on Boss's own OD-1 that had added a tone knob. The SD-1 kept the OD-1's asymmetrical clipping, which Boss had patented, and added Tone to the Level and Drive controls. The result is a mid-focused overdrive centered around 800Hz, with a little more grit than a Tube Screamer. In the 1980s rock players used it to push already-cranked Marshalls into more gain. The Edge has had one on his board since the Boy tour in 1981, David Gilmour used one on his 1984 solo album About Face, and Jimmy Page had one in The Firm. Zakk Wylde, Kirk Hammett and Josh Homme are fans too, and Homme runs it with the drive down and the tone up as a treble booster. Because the circuit hasn't changed, a working SD-1 from any decade gives you the sound. If you collect, look for a Japan-made unit. If you plan to mod it, get one built before the surface-mount switch around 2018.
Scratchy pots and worn jacks are the usual wear. The SD-1 is a common mod platform, and Analog Man warns that some eBay units claiming his mod were done by someone else.
Buying guide
Buy a Taiwan SD-1 to play, since Boss says the circuit hasn't changed since 1981, and we'd take the $53 one titled tested. About 161 are for sale, and the $75–220 band blends US sellers asking about $55–90 delivered for Taiwan units with Japan-made 1980s units asking about $140–430, mostly from Japanese dealers. On a Japan unit the year and chip in the title (JRC4558D, NEC C4558C) are the seller's claim, so ask for the bottom plate and a gut shot, and run an ACA-labeled one on a battery or an ACA adapter. Skip the $430 one titled NEC C4558C, about $210 over the band.
$33.09est. delivered
The lowest delivered SD-1 at $33, a Taiwan unit titled early 2000s, at auction with 2 bids and nearly five days left. We'd stop around $55 delivered, where tested fixed-price ones start.
Boss SD-1 Super Overdrive Guitar Effect Pedal; Made in Taiwan; Early 2000’s
$53.07est. delivered
Titled tested and works great, for $53 delivered from a US seller. The circuit hasn't changed since 1981, so this is the SD-1 sound for about a third of a Japan unit's ask.
BOSS SD-1 Super OverDrive Guitar Effects Pedal – Tested – Works Great
$75.98est. delivered
Titled tested and working and already in the US, at $76 delivered, the bottom of the band. A good fallback if the $53 one sells.

$175.00est. delivered
Titled March 1983 with a JRC4558DD chip and ACA power, a Japan unit at $175 delivered, inside the band. Ask for a gut shot to confirm the chip and a bottom-plate photo for the date.
