Ibanez · TS9 · c.1981–1985; reissued from 1992
The TS9 replaced the TS-808 when Ibanez rolled out its 9 series around 1982. Inside it's nearly the same pedal. Ibanez changed the output section, which makes it a little brighter and less smooth, and the footswitch grew to cover about a third of the box. Former Ibanez product manager John Lomas says nobody cared much at first, and it was gone by 1985. Then players like The Edge, Gary Moore and Trey Anastasio made it a staple, and Ibanez brought it back around 1992 with the Toshiba TA75558 chip most late originals used, plus a manual dated 1981. That makes originals and early reissues hard to tell apart. Analog Man's tells are a black label, or a silver label with a serial starting 3 or 4, green-coated resistors, and early-1980s date codes on the capacitors. Anything with a CE mark is a reissue, and from late 2002 the board and battery cover say Ibanez instead of Maxon. If you want an original, check the guts. If you just want the sound, any reissue will do.
Tone varies from batch to batch because originals were built with whatever parts were on hand, and Analog Man rates the JRC2043DD chip in some late units poorly. Swapped chips, true-bypass mods and reissues sold as originals are common, and late-2002 units had input jacks that could jam.
Buying guide
For the sound, we'd buy the early-1990s Maxon-board reissue titled works at $100 delivered, and plain used TS9s start at $83. About 149 are for sale and most ask $90–180 delivered, while titled 1980s originals ask about $420 and up. Lots of titles call a 1990s reissue vintage, since Ibanez brought the TS9 back in 1992 with the TA75558 chip many late originals used, so check for a CE mark (reissues only), a serial starting 3 or 4 on a silver label, and green resistors in a gut shot before paying original money. Treat chip names in titles as the seller's claim, and skip the zero-feedback seller at $70.

The lowest delivered TS9 from a seller with real feedback, $83 from the US. The title gives no year, so at this price expect a later reissue, and ask for a short clip since it isn't titled tested.

Ibanez TS9 Tube Screamer - Perfect Working Condition
$419.00delivered
Titled a 1984 Maxon-built original with a TA75558P, and at $419 delivered it's the lowest ask for a titled original here. A 1984 unit should show a serial starting with 4 and no CE mark, so check both in the photos and ask for a gut shot to confirm the chip.
