Mike Matthews started Electro-Harmonix in New York City in 1968, and its first product was the LPB-1 booster, designed by Bell Labs engineer Bob Myer. The Big Muff Pi followed in 1969, and David Cockerell's Small Stone phaser outsold it a few years later. By the late 1970s EHX was building the Memory Man, the Electric Mistress and their Deluxe versions in Manhattan. A union fight and Japanese competition put the company under by 1984. Matthews rebuilt through New Sensor and Sovtek in Russia, where Big Muffs and Small Stones were made in the 1990s, then moved pedal production back to New York in 2000 and added new designs like the POG. Kit Rae's Big Muff Page is the best guide to which Muff is which. When you shop, work out which era and factory made the pedal, check the power jack, since some EHX pedals need a 3.5mm tip-positive plug or a 24-volt adapter, and ask for a clip of every control.
