Electro-Harmonix · Holy Grail · By 2004–present (die-cast chassis since 2009)
The Holy Grail is EHX's small digital reverb, with three modes on a switch and one knob that sets how much reverb you hear. Spring copies an amp's spring tank, Hall gives you a big room, and Flerb mixes flanging into the reverb for a floaty, ethereal wash. It was in EHX's catalog by 2004 in a larger box, and in March 2009 EHX moved it into the smaller die-cast chassis it still uses. The bigger Holy Grail Plus added a Room mode and an Amount knob. EHX said in 2009 that John Frusciante had toured and recorded with one, and Khruangbin's Mark Speer told Premier Guitar he leaves his on the spring setting around noon, so he isn't stuck with whatever amp reverb a venue has. Both versions are true bypass. The classic box came with a 9-volt adapter and the die-cast one with EHX's 9.6-volt supply, so check which you're getting. It's a set-and-forget pedal, so buy whichever version is cleaner and comes with its adapter.
The usual wear is a scratchy Reverb knob, a tired footswitch or a worn mode switch. The adapter is often missing too.
Buying guide
We'd buy the one titled tested with its manual and power cord at $141 delivered, and complete ones from US sellers start at $90. About 92 are for sale and most ask $110–320 delivered, a wide band because Japanese resellers ask about $200 to $500, so skip the $496 one. The page pools the larger classic box (by 2004 to 2009), the small die-cast Nano and the Plus, and the classic takes a 9V adapter while the die-cast one wants EHX's 9.6V supply, so check the box size in the photos and budget for the right adapter if it's missing. Every version is made in New York, so Made in USA in a title doesn't date it.
$89.99delivered
The lowest delivered complete Holy Grail at $90 from a 100% US seller. The title doesn't name the version or a test, so check the box size in the photos and ask whether an adapter comes with it.
