Electro-Harmonix · Deluxe Memory Man · Late 1970s–1984; reissued after EHX's US return
Electro-Harmonix released the first Memory Man in 1976, and EHX calls it the first IC-based analog delay that could make distinct echoes. The Deluxe added a chorus and vibrato section, and Kit Rae credits it to Howard Davis, who ran analog design at EHX in the late 1970s. The Edge is the player everyone thinks of. He told Guitar World that U2 got its first Memory Man while cutting early demos, and that its rhythms changed how he wrote, and EHX still points to him when it talks about the Deluxe. The originals went away when EHX closed in 1984. Around the company's US return, Mike Matthews told Vintage Guitar the Deluxe reissue was ready, in the original packaging and a little quieter than the first run. The current version gives up to 550ms of delay, has true bypass and runs on EHX's 24-volt adapter. Collectors want the 1970s originals, and you should hear one before you pay. Most players will be happier with a reissue that takes a stock adapter and has true bypass.
Scratchy pots and noisy jacks are the usual wear on a pedal this old. Reissues need EHX's 24-volt adapter, so a standard 9-volt pedal supply won't run one.
Buying guide
Most players should buy a used reissue from a US seller at $204–226 delivered, and leave the $600–1,350 band to collectors chasing 1970s originals. About 63 are listed, and the ones titled 1976–1979 ask $999–1,620 delivered, mostly from Japanese dealers, so the US one titled 1976 at $999 is the collector buy. Reissues need EHX's 24V adapter and a 9V pedal supply won't run one, so ask which adapter comes with it, and ask for a clip with the Feedback up and the Chorus/Vibrato swept, since tired pots and jacks are the usual wear. Skip japan-good-goods' $2,013 one titled untested, about $660 over the band.
