Boss · DM-2 · 1981–1984
The DM-2 is the analog delay Boss fans still talk about. It arrived in 1981, shrinking the bigger DM-1 into the compact box and swapping its CCD chip for a bucket-brigade device. To squeeze 300ms out of that chip, Boss engineers limited the frequency response of the repeats, and the dark, warm echo that came out is exactly what people want. It didn't last long. The digital DD-2 arrived in 1983, and the cheaper DM-3 replaced the DM-2 in 1984. Analog Man says there are really two DM-2s. Early ones use the MN3005 chip, and from serial number 182000 up they're basically a DM-3 with the MN3205, so he recommends the earlier version for the best sound. Every DM-2 was made in Japan and built for Boss's ACA adapter, which puts out about 12 volts. If you want the classic, check the serial and the chip. If you just want the sound with a longer delay option, the DM-2W Waza Craft is the easy route.
Analog delays get noisy with age, and a DM-2 that sounds weak may just be on the wrong power supply. Scratchy pots and worn jacks are common on a pedal this old.
Buying guide
For the early MN3005 sound we'd pay $379 for the Japan dealer's Early Model with serial 110700, below the 182000 serial where Analog Man says the later MN3205 chip starts. About 86 are for sale and most ask $260–470 delivered, all Japan-made from 1981 to 1984, with late MN3205 units from about $215 and titles claiming the MN3005 asking $580–790. The bottom-plate serial is the quickest check and chip claims are the seller's word, so ask for a gut shot, and run it on a battery or an ACA adapter, since a regular 9V supply can make a good one sound weak. Titles saying 1970 or 1970's are wrong, since the DM-2 came out in 1981, and skip the $790 MN3005 one, about $320 over the band.
$112.50delivered
The lowest delivered DM-2 right now at $113, but it's an auction with 3 bids and over two days left, so it'll climb. Ask for the serial before you bid, and stop around $215 delivered, where fixed-price late units start.
Boss DM-2 Delay (Black Label) 1981 - 1984 - Pink
$271.00delivered
Titled tested and late model, at $271 delivered near the bottom of the band, so it's a player's DM-2 with the MN3205 that Analog Man calls basically a DM-3 inside. Ask for the bottom-plate serial to confirm the version.
BOSS DM-2 Delay Made in Japan Late Model Analog Effects Pedal Used Tested
$379.00delivered
Titled Early Model with serial 110700, below Analog Man's 182000 cutoff, which points to the MN3005 chip, at $379 delivered inside the band. Ask for a gut shot to confirm the chip before you pay a collector price.
