The DD-3 is a DD-2 with a lower price tag. Boss's DD-2 was the first digital delay in a stompbox, built around a custom chip from Roland's SDE-3000 rack delay, the unit Steve Vai and Eddie Van Halen used. When parts got cheaper in 1986, Boss renamed it the DD-3 instead of cutting the DD-2's price, and Boss says the two are identical apart from small cosmetic changes. You get short, medium and long ranges up to 800ms, plus a Hold mode. MusicRadar counts at least three versions. The first was the reworked DD-2, with a wobbly Mode control. The second moved to a new board with a much smaller delay chip, around when production went from Japan to Taiwan. The third uses a modern surface-mount board. On early units the repeats feed back through an analog path with its own character. MusicRadar lists Radiohead, Blur and The Cult among the bands using it and its successors. Boss replaced it with the tap-tempo DD-3T in 2019, so every DD-3 is used now.
The Mode control on early units is known for being wobbly, and pots and jacks wear on pedals that toured. Ask about any dropouts in the repeats.
Buying guide
Any working DD-3 gives you the same 800ms delay and Hold mode, and we'd buy the $105 one from Japan titled test completed. About 137 are for sale and most ask $100–140 delivered, while Japan-made blue-label units titled Long Chip, meaning the first-version board with the big delay chip, ask $127–214. Ask for a clip switching through the modes and one with the feedback turned up, since the Mode control on early units is known to wobble and worn ones can drop repeats. Skip the $255 long-chip one, about $115 over the band from a 98.4% seller.
