MXR · Carbon Copy M169 · 2008–present
The Carbon Copy is a Dunlop-era MXR design rather than a Rochester reissue, and it's one of the most common delays on pedalboards today. It came out in 2008, and by its tenth birthday Dunlop was calling it the world's best-selling analog delay. Bucket-brigade chips give up to 600ms of warm repeats, with Delay, Mix and Regen knobs and a Mod button that adds a tape-style wobble. Two trimpots inside set the width and rate of that wobble. It's true bypass and runs on a 9V battery or an adapter. Dunlop lists Joe Perry, the Edge, Al Di Meola, Matt Pike and Tosin Abasi among its users. The family grew with the limited Carbon Copy Bright in 2015, the tap-tempo Deluxe in 2017 and the Mini in 2019. Used ones are easy to find, so you can be picky. Get the standard M169 for simple analog echo, the Deluxe if you need tap tempo and up to 1.2 seconds, or the Mini if board space is tight.
Most problems are ordinary pedal wear, like a tired footswitch or a loose jack. Internal trimpots that a previous owner has moved can make the modulation sound off until you reset them.
Buying guide
A plain used M169 at $110 delivered from capitolguitars is the cheapest good one, and we'd pay $133 for the one titled tested with its box and docs. About 121 are for sale and most ask $120–190 delivered. The Carbon Copy has only been made since 2008, so condition, the box and shipping from Japan move the price more than age does, and the 1985 in one title is simply wrong. Ask for a clip turning Delay from short to long with Mod on, ask whether the inside Width and Rate trimpots have been moved, and skip the zero-feedback seller at $110.
