Electro-Harmonix · Big Muff Pi (NYC) · 2000–present
The NYC Big Muff Pi is the one EHX has made in New York since 2000, and it's still in the catalog. Early on it was sold as a reissue, but Kit Rae notes it doesn't copy any single older version. Fran Blanche, who founded Frantone, built a dozen or so prototypes for EHX, and Mike Matthews and his staff chose one that mixes late-1970s Ram's Head values with a deeply scooped tone stack from an early Triangle. It looks like the red and black Muffs of the late 1970s, but it adds a red LED and a battery door, both firsts for an American Muff. The first 2000 boards used 2N5088 transistors and weren't true bypass. EHX added true bypass within the first year or so, and in 2007 moved to BC550C transistors and a thicker, bassier voice. The early circuit is the closest to an early-1970s Muff. EHX names Pink Floyd and the White Stripes when it talks about the Pi, and Kit Rae points to Jack White's tone for this version. If you want a Big Muff to play rather than collect, this is the one to buy.
Like any pedal that lives on the floor, the pots can get scratchy and the footswitch can wear out. Older units take a tip-positive 3.5mm plug, so a standard barrel adapter won't fit.
Buying guide
This is the Big Muff to play rather than collect, and used ones from US sellers ask $70–100 delivered, while a new one from a dealer is $101.60. About 32 are listed and the $85–110 band sits right at that new price, so we'd pick the $88 one with its box and wouldn't pay over $100 for a used one. Look for the red LED and battery door that mark an NYC Muff, ask for a clip turning each knob for crackle, and check the power jack, since older units take a 3.5mm tip-positive plug that a standard barrel adapter won't fit. Skip the $200 one titled Made in NYC, about $90 over the band, since every one of these is made in New York.
$69.99delivered
The lowest delivered working-as-titled NYC Muff at $70 from a US seller, about $15 under the band. It isn't titled tested, so ask for a clip turning each knob and switching it on and off.
