Electro-Harmonix · Big Muff Pi V2 (Ram's Head) · c. 1973–1977
The Ram's Head is the second Big Muff, made in New York from about 1973 to 1977 in a bigger box with the three knobs in a row. Its nickname comes from the odd little face printed in the lower right corner, which EHX used as a logo for years, though Kit Rae points out it doesn't look much like a ram. David Gilmour's own Ram's Head dates from 1974, and he used it for the Comfortably Numb solos and across Animals and The Wall. Ernie Isley played one through much of the 1970s, and J Mascis is another well-known user. EHX changed the circuit constantly, with about 20 variants, and the 1973 Violet version is the collector favorite. It's named for the violet and blue graphics on many early units, though the same circuit turns up under red and black print too. Later boxes swapped the rubber skid pad for four feet and added OFF to the graphics. Want the sound for less? EHX's 2019 nano reissue copies a 1973 Violet. Want an original? Make sure the board, pots and switches haven't been replaced.
Added LEDs and power jacks, replaced pots and switches and odd knobs are common, and some were sent back to EHX for repair and came home with a different board. Some Ram's Heads are positive ground (PNP), so they can't share a standard daisy-chained supply.
Buying guide
Buy a Ram's Head from a US seller, where fixed-price ones ask $1,262–1,520 delivered, and the one titled working at $1,262 is our pick. About 16 are listed, and the $2,125–4,100 band reads high because Japanese dealers like dimeback-516 and dr_nine ask $2,733–5,117 for the rest. Ask for a photo inside showing a board marked 3003, check for an added power jack or LED and replaced pots or switches, and remember originals ran on a 9V battery only, with some positive-ground units that can't share a daisy-chained supply. A 1970s original listed at $69.99 is too cheap to be real, and we left two of those out.

$1,262.06est. delivered
Titled working and called a V2, at $1,262 delivered from a US seller, about $860 under the band and the lowest fixed price here. Ask for a photo inside to check the 3003 board and the pots, and look for an added power jack.
70’s Electro Harmonix Ram's Head Big Muff Pi Fuzz Pedal Working! Collectible V2
$1,399.99delivered
Titled 1974 and original, from a US dealer at $1,400 delivered, while Japanese dealers ask about twice that or more. Gilmour's own Ram's Head is a 1974, and you'd still want a gut shot to confirm the board, pots and switch haven't been replaced.
