Electro-Harmonix · Big Muff Pi V1 (Triangle) · Late 1969–1973
The Triangle is the first Big Muff Pi, named for the way its Volume, Sustain and Tone knobs sit in a triangle on a folded sheet-metal box. Bob Myer, a Bell Labs engineer, designed the four-transistor circuit, and Mike Matthews tuned it by ear. Kit Rae dates the first hand-wired units to late 1969, and production ran until about 1973. Carlos Santana bought one in 1971, Tony Peluso played one on the Carpenters' Goodbye to Love, and Ernie Isley used one on (Who's) That Lady. Matthews says Manny's Music sold one to Jimi Hendrix, though that story is still argued over. EHX swapped parts whenever stock ran out, so Kit Rae counts around 17 circuit variants, and no two Triangles are guaranteed to sound alike. Collectors look for the early FUZZ-labeled first edition, the button-top 2N5133 or FS36999 transistors and original knobs. If you want the sound on a pedalboard, EHX's 2018 nano reissue is the sensible buy. If it's the history you're after, buy an original and check every part against Kit Rae's photos.
Replaced knobs, a missing rubber skid pad and added power jacks or LEDs are the usual changes, and 50 years of repairs can mean swapped parts inside. A few Triangles are positive ground (PNP), which will short a standard daisy-chained power supply.
Buying guide
With only about 10 Triangles listed, the $2,050–2,675 band is a rough read, and we'd start with the 1969 one titled FS36999 from a US seller at $2,270 delivered, or the 1972 one at $2,000 if price matters more. At these prices fakes and swapped parts are the risk, so ask for a gut shot, the transistor markings and the pot date codes, and compare them against Kit Rae's reference photos before you pay. Originals ran on a 9V battery only, so a power jack or LED means a mod, and a few positive-ground units will short a daisy-chained supply. Check the $1,325 one hardest, since it's $725 under the band with no year in the title, and pass on the $3,573 one from Japan, about $900 over the band with nothing in the title to explain it.

The lowest ask on a Triangle here at $1,325 delivered from a US seller, about $725 under the band. The title gives no year, so get a gut shot and the pot codes and check them against Kit Rae's photos before you offer.

A 1972 Triangle from a US seller at $2,000 delivered, just under the band. The title says nothing about the transistors, so ask for a gut shot and check the knobs and pots against Kit Rae's photos.

$2,269.95est. delivered
Titled 1969 with FS36999 button-top transistors, at $2,270 delivered, inside the band and $430 under a US listing making the same transistor claim. A late-1969 first edition should be perfboard with a FUZZ label, so ask for a gut shot to see which edition this is.
