Dunlop · JHF1
Ivor Arbiter's Fuzz Face appeared in London in late 1966, a two-transistor fuzz in a round case that looks like a smiling face. The first ones used germanium transistors, and by about 1969 Dallas-Arbiter had moved to silicon, plastic BC183s at first and then metal-can BC108s. Hendrix used silicon units and bought several at a time to find a good one. Dunlop took over the Fuzz Face in 1993, and the JHF1 is its Jimi Hendrix model, a copy of a 1969 to 1970 Dallas-Arbiter unit built around the BC108. That makes it a silicon fuzz. It's brighter and fuzzier than Dunlop's germanium JDF2, and it cleans up a good deal, though not completely, when you roll back the guitar volume. Dunlop gives it a hand-wired brown circuit board and a turquoise hammertone case, though Analog Man also mentions grey JHF1s. It runs on a 9V battery only. Put it first in your chain, since a Fuzz Face reacts to whatever sits in front of it. Analog Man calls the BC108 Jimi model great.
Battery snaps wear out on battery-only pedals, and the Fuzz and Volume pots can crackle with age. Some have been modified, including full board swaps.
Buying guide
Dunlop still makes the JHF1, and US dealers list it new at $179.99 delivered, so that's the most a used one is worth. About 37 are for sale and most ask $170–360 delivered, but the cheapest used one from a seller with feedback is titled tested at $135 from the US, while Japanese resellers ask $240 to $444. It's a BC108 silicon fuzz that runs on a 9V battery only, so a power jack on the case means someone modded it, and a red Dunlop Fuzz Face is usually the germanium JDF2. Ask for a clip rolling the guitar volume down, and skip the copied-title listing from Japan at $393.
