Dunlop · GCB95 · 1982–present
The wah started by accident. In late 1966, Brad Plunkett at Thomas Organ, then part of Warwick Electronics, was reworking a tone circuit for a Vox amp and wired it into an organ volume pedal. It went on sale in early 1967, first as the Vox Clyde McCoy and soon as the Cry Baby, built in Italy by JEN, and Hendrix and Clapton had it on record that year. After Thomas Organ stopped making it, Dunlop bought the original tooling and machinery in 1982 and launched the GCB95, its first wah. Dunlop raised the frequency range for a brighter, more aggressive voice and tightened up the parts, since old Cry Babys varied a lot from one pedal to the next. In 2004 Dunlop swapped its original custom inductor for the red Fasel. Tom Morello has used a GCB95 on every album and tour. Want a working wah that cuts through a band? This is it, and there are plenty around. Want something darker and more vintage? Look at the GCB95F Classic or the Clyde McCoy CM95.
The pot gets scratchy, the gear that turns it wears, and toe switches can stop clicking reliably after years of stomping. Rubber treads peel with age.
Buying guide
We'd buy the $81 one titled tested with its box, or the $49 boxed one if you'd rather save and ask for a sweep video first. About 168 are for sale and most ask $60–85 delivered. Titles claiming a black inductor, a metal can inductor or AA series ask $131–237 here, and those are the seller's word, so ask for a board photo with the bottom plate off. On any of them, get a video rocking the treadle heel to toe to check the pot and gear, and skip the $237 one titled transition era, about $150 over the band.

The lowest delivered GCB95 once you set aside a 97.9% seller, at $49 with the box. There's no test claim, so ask for a video rocking the treadle and clicking the toe switch.
