Vox V847 Wah
The V847 is Vox's everyday wah, and Analog Man has long called it the V-847 reissue. Vox says it's built to the specifications of the original wah developed in the 1960s, the pedal that came out of Thomas Organ's lab in 1966 and ended up on records by Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton. The current version is the V847A. It adds a buffered input so your tone holds up when the wah's off, an AC adapter jack, and an inductor Vox redesigned to sit closer to the original spec. Analog Man, who works on plenty of these, says the V847's jacks are cheap Chinese parts that get noisy and break, and he suggests swapping them for Switchcraft jacks. He can also add true bypass to a V847A, though he can't revoice one the way he can an older V847. Buy a V847A if you want a dependable wah for a pedalboard. If you're after a vintage voice, look at Vox's V846 reissues.

What to check before you buy
Analog Man flags the V847's jacks as noisy and prone to breaking. Like any wah, the treadle pot wears and gets scratchy, and the toe switch takes a beating.
- 01Version: Check the bottom plate or listing photos for V847 or V847A. The A adds the AC jack and buffered input.
- 02Sweep: Ask for a short clip rocking the treadle slowly. The sweep should be smooth with no crackle or dropouts.
- 03Jacks: On arrival, wiggle a cable in each jack while playing. The sound shouldn't cut out or crackle.
- 04Toe switch: Ask whether the switch under the toe engages every time. It should click on and off without a hard stomp.

Which one to buy
§ Oct 10, 2026We'd buy the V847A with a case at $109 delivered, since the A adds a buffered input and an AC adapter jack, or save with the $85 V847 titled works perfectly if you don't need those. About 137 are for sale and most ask $100–200 delivered, with Union Jack and gold limited editions at $139–230 and one Japan dealer listing several at $251 plus shipping. Analog Man says the V847's jacks are cheap parts that get noisy and break, so ask for a clip rocking the treadle, wiggle each cable on arrival, and check the bottom plate for V847 or V847A. Skip the $287 one from Japan titled Made in USA 1999, about $90 over the band, and treat a title saying true bypass as a modified pedal.
