Dunlop · JH1D
Hendrix's wah was a Thomas Organ design built by JEN in Italy, and Dunlop's Jimi Hendrix Cry Baby is its attempt to copy one. The current model is the JH1D. Dunlop voiced it for the thick, throaty sweep on Voodoo Child (Slight Return), Up From the Skies, Little Miss Lover and Still Raining, Still Dreaming, and housed it in a lightweight aluminum body with a black Italian crinkle finish, unlike the GCB95's heavy die-cast case. Burning of the Midnight Lamp, released in August 1967, was his first recorded track with a Cry Baby. Original Thomas Organ pedals varied a lot, and Dunlop says players like Hendrix went through six or seven to find one that sounded right. A JH1D takes that gamble away. There's also a half-size JHM9 Mini, and a gloss-black 70th Anniversary version came out in 2012 as a limited run. Pick the JH1D if you want a darker, vintage-style wah for leads. Pick a GCB95 if you want the brighter modern voice that cuts through a band.
Like any Cry Baby, the pot, the gear and the toe switch wear with use. The crinkle finish chips at the edges, which is cosmetic.
Buying guide
The cheapest good ones are a JH-1B titled tested and working at $99 delivered and a current JH1D at $101, both from US sellers. About 29 are for sale and most ask $170–210 delivered, because new JH1Ds from US dealers sit at $179.99, so a used one only makes sense well under that. This page pools the 1990s JH-1, the JH-1B and the current JH1D, so match the model name in the photos to the title, and ask for a video rocking the treadle heel to toe for a smooth sweep and a clean toe-switch click. Skip the $366 JH1D from Japan, about twice a new one from a US store.
$99.00delivered
The lowest delivered working Hendrix wah at $99, a JH-1B titled tested and working from a 100% US seller. Ask for a heel-to-toe video, since the pot and gear are what wear on a Cry Baby.

Dunlop JH-1B Jimi Hendrix Signature Cry Baby Wah Pedal Tested Working
