Electro-Harmonix · Russian Big Muff Pi (black) · c. 1998–2009
The Black Russian closed out the Russian Big Muffs. Around 1998 the green Sovtek box turned black with yellow graphics, partly because the St. Petersburg factory couldn't get a consistent green paint, and Kit Rae calls that large six-screw box Version 7D. A smaller, lighter box he calls Version 8 followed around 1999 and lasted until EHX ended Russian production in 2009. Along the way the graphics picked up the ITC Pioneer Big Muff lettering of the American Muffs, the Sovtek name disappeared, and chicken-head knobs replaced the dimpled ones. Inside it's the same circuit as the late bubble-font Green Russian, a little grittier and less bassy than a Civil War. That easy-to-change board made the V8 a favorite with modders, so check for changed parts. The Tall Font and Bubble Font labels you'll see in listings belong to the green Russian Muffs. The large-box 7D is the scarcer find, and the small-box V8 is the one to buy if you just want to play a Russian Muff.
Modified boards are common, since the V8 was a favorite for tone mods. Look out for added power jacks too, because every one left the factory battery only.
Buying guide
Buy a Black Russian from a US seller at about $211 delivered, or the one titled tested from Japan at $270, and save the $330–480 band for the scarcer large box. About 27 are listed, and most ship from Japanese dealers at $270–500 delivered, many titled small-box V8, while the US tall box at $440 is our collector pick. Every one left the factory battery only and the V8 was a modder's favorite, so check the photos for an added power jack and ask for a board photo with clean factory solder. Skip the zero-feedback seller in Italy, and the $790 one titled bubble font, a label usually tied to the green Russian Muffs, about $310 over the band.
$172.66est. delivered
The lowest delivered Black Russian at $173 from a US seller, about $160 under the band. eBay lists it as new, but production ended in 2009 and the title doesn't say new, so ask for photos of the MADE IN RUSSIA text on the end and the board inside.
