MXR · Phase 90 block · About 1977–1984
Around 1977 MXR swapped the cursive logo for block lettering, and the Phase 90 inside changed with it. Dunlop says MXR's engineers added a feedback resistor at that point, giving the block circuit a stronger, slightly dirtier sweep than the soft script version. This is the era of the first two Van Halen records, and Eddie Van Halen used a Phase 90 on Eruption, Atomic Punk and Ain't Talkin' 'bout Love. Mick Jones of the Clash used one on Lost in the Supermarket in 1979. Block pedals come in two batches. Units made before 1981 are battery-only with no LED, while those from 1981 to 1984 added an LED and a small 1/8-inch power jack on the same circuit board. MXR stopped making pedals in 1984, and Dunlop bought the brand in 1987 and brought the Phase 90 back in block form. Want the classic sound on a working pedalboard? A Dunlop M101 has an LED and a power jack. Want a piece of history? Look for a Rochester-made block with its original board and paint.
Scratchy Speed pots, worn footswitches and corroded battery snaps are the usual age problems. Dunlop reissues and modded units sometimes get listed as Rochester originals.
Buying guide
With only about 12 for sale, the $190–300 band is a rough read. We'd buy the one titled 1981 from a 100% US seller at $179 delivered, since 1981 to 1984 units have an LED and a small power jack, while the 1980 block-logo one at $229 runs on a battery only. Several titles only say vintage with no logo or year, so confirm the block lettering in the photos and ask for a gut shot, because Dunlop reissues and modded units get listed as Rochester originals. Skip the $1,037 one from Japan, about $740 over the band, and if you just want the sound on a pedalboard, a Dunlop M101 has the LED and jack.
