MXR Dyna Comp
Ask a Nashville picker about compressors and you'll hear about the little red Dyna Comp. MXR released it in the early 1970s with two knobs, Output and Sensitivity, and a CA3080 chip doing the work. It doesn't try to be transparent. It squashes the attack and adds sustain, and that colored sound is the reason people buy it. Lowell George and Bonnie Raitt used it for slide, David Gilmour for singing single notes, and Andy Summers for his ringing clean chords. MXR itself calls the 1976 Dyna Comp the ultimate stompbox compressor, and Dunlop says the mid-1970s units are especially prized. Those use the CA3080 in a metal can, which went out of production in the 1980s, so when the MXR Custom Shop reissued the '76 in 2008 it could only make a limited run. Dunlop's everyday M102 adds an LED, a power jack and true bypass, and Dunlop says it reacts faster and harder than the script version. Buy a vintage one for that classic squash, or an M102 if you just want it on your board.

What to check before you buy
Scratchy Output and Sensitivity pots are common on old units, and a dead metal-can CA3080 is hard to replace with the original part. Modded boards and repainted boxes turn up too.
- 01Chip: Ask the seller for a photo of the circuit board. A mid-1970s unit should show the CA3080 in a small round metal can.
- 02Logo: Look at the logo in the photos. Script logos are the earlier units collectors prize most.
- 03Squash: Ask for a short clip with Sensitivity low, then high. The attack should flatten and the sustain should grow as it goes up.
- 04Pots: Ask the seller to turn both knobs in the clip. Volume and compression should change smoothly with no crackle.
- 05LED and jack: Check the case in the photos for an LED and a power jack. An MXR unit without them was made before 1981 and runs on a battery.
