Boss TU-2 Chromatic Tuner
The TU-2 put Boss's tuner technology into a compact stompbox in 1998, and for about a decade it sat at the front of a huge number of pro pedalboards. Boss itself says it's hard to overstate how common it was. Stomp on it and it mutes your signal, or passes it through if you prefer, while an 11-LED stream meter and a note display show how close you are. It has seven tuning modes, covering chromatic plus regular, flat and double-flat settings for guitar and bass, and the reference pitch runs from 438 to 445Hz. Boss replaced it with the TU-3 in 2009, and the TU-3 added a high-brightness mode for daylight. That history is good news for a used buyer. There are lots of TU-2s out there, and tuning hasn't changed. If you play outdoors in bright sun, look at a TU-3 instead. For a dark stage or a home board, a working TU-2 does the job and puts a Boss buffer at the front of your chain.

What to check before you buy
Dead LED segments and a worn footswitch are the things to rule out on a tuner that's been stomped for years. A loose jack on a tuner can cut out everything after it.
- 01Display: Ask for a short clip of it tuning a string. Every LED and the note display should light cleanly.
- 02Mute: Ask the seller to confirm mute mode works. With the tuner on, no sound should reach the amp.
- 03Jacks: Ask whether the input and output jacks are tight. Wiggling a cable shouldn't cause crackle or dropouts.
- 04Accuracy: On arrival, check it against another tuner. The two should agree on every string.
Buying guide
Which one to buy
§ Oct 10, 2026Tuning hasn't changed since the TU-2, so buy on condition and price, and we'd take the $57 one titled tested that ships free from Japan. About 80 are for sale and most ask $60–85 delivered, many from Japan resellers, and Japan-market units take the same 9V supply as US ones. Ask for a clip of it tuning a string so you can see every LED and the note display light, and check the jacks are tight, since a loose jack on a tuner cuts out everything after it. Skip the $185 one from Japan, about $100 over the band with nothing in the title to explain it.
